Happy new year and welcome back to school!
UBC courses for Term 2 will mostly be online again, so here are some resources if you have any troubles with Canvas, Zoom, and other learning technologies; as well as tips for managing your time while learning at home.
Having Trouble with Learning Technologies?
- Follow this step-by-step guide to download Microsoft 365 for free from the UBC Software Downloads Centre.
- Student’s Guide to Canvas (PDF guide found here)
- Student’s Guide to Zoom
- Student’s Guide to Collaborate Ultra
Chapman Learning Commons Online Assistants are also ready to help answer your questions about academic support and UBC learning technologies! If you need technical support, drop in to our virtual office (chat or video call from 9am to 5pm PST, Monday to Friday), email us to book a short live consultation, or fill out this form!
Tips for Learning from Home
- Keep Learning is a great resource for setting up, online learning tips, technologies and self-care.
- Take the Online Learning Readiness Questionnaire to determine if you are prepared for success in your online courses.
- Online or not, time management is always a valuable skill for students. Access the Managing Your Time toolkit to establish short and long-term goals.
- The Online Learners toolkit lets you know about library services, transitioning to learning online, and setting up your space at home.

Time Management When Learning Online
With online learning, some of us are taking classes that have both asynchronous (on our own time) and synchronous (“live”) learning elements. In this session you will learn how to separate your “work space” from your “home space” when you can’t physically come and go from class. You will also get tips on time management as a remote learner to set you up for success when taking classes online.
