Navigating university life can feel like a juggling act at times. Between assignments, group projects, and last-minute study sessions, I’ve found myself heading to the library more times than I can count. But sometimes, it’s tough to know exactly when the library will save the day. Here’s how the UBC libraries have come to my rescue, based on my own experiences.
When a group project doesn’t go according to plan.
I can’t be the only one who’s been part of a group project that’s barely holding it together, right? Last year, my team was completely unorganized for our psychology research presentation. We booked a room at Woodward Library, spread out all our materials on the big table, and actually managed to figure out who was doing what (thankfully before the deadline!). The large study rooms there really saved us—without them, we probably would have been sitting on the floor in some random hallway trying to get things done.
If you’re in business, though, I’d recommend David Lam Library. I used their digital media lab for a presentation once, and it made me feel so much more prepared. Plus, they have co-curricular learning support if you need extra help with business-related topics.

Pro Tip: Book the study rooms online in advance, trust me there’s nothing more stressful than wandering around with everything trying to find a spot (especially in the peak season).
When I’m overwhelmed and need some quiet
When the noise in my apartment (and my brain) becomes too much, I escape to Koerner Library. It has these tucked-away corners that always seem to be peaceful, even when campus is buzzing. During finals, though, I’ve found myself drawn to IKB’s silent spaces, especially the Ridington Room. There’s something about that room—high ceilings, wooden beams, all the portraits—that makes me feel like I am transported back in time. It’s a sanctuary when I need to really focus.
When I have to churn out a research paper
UBC’s libraries aren’t just for cramming—they’re packed with resources for when your assignment requires more than just a Google search. I remember working on a project about Indigenous studies, and Xwi7xwa Library had everything I needed, from unique books to research papers. It’s a hidden gem if you’re diving into First Nations topics.
For my psychology courses, Koerner Library has been a lifesaver on more than one occasion, for finding government publications and interdisciplinary studies. And I’ve seen my science friends camp out in Woodward Library—it’s the spot for anything health or science-related.

When I’m doing last-minute work (or Just Procrastinating!)
Perfect for: Those nights when you need to power through a deadline.
Need a space that’s open late? IKB is everyone’s best friend! It’s open till midnight, which has been a game-changer for those last-minute assignments (and let’s be real, it happens more often than I’d like to admit). The seating is super comfy, and there’s always an outlet nearby for my dying laptop.
When I need help with writing or study skills
We all hit that wall when writing or studying just doesn’t come together. I’ve had a few moments of staring at a blank page, wondering if my essay will ever make sense. That’s when I discovered the Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication (at multiple library branches). They helped me tighten up my thesis and gave me feedback that made my writing clearer. If you’re like me and sometimes overthink every sentence, they’re a lifesaver.
The Chapman Learning Commons (CLC) is home to Peer Academic Coaches from science, to arts, and kinesiology, who have time and time again given me great advice for tackling tough concepts.
Things to Keep in Mind
- All libraries have public printers if you need to print assignments at the last minute
- Internet access ports are everywhere. Look for yellow or green stickers to connect.
- Food and drink policies vary, so watch for signs about where you can snack while you study.
In a nutshell, UBC’s libraries are lifesavers, no matter the situation. Whether you’re looking for quiet, collaboration, or specialized resources, there’s a library branch ready to help.
Happy studying!
