General Services

AMS Tutoring 

The Alma Mater Society (AMS) provides a tutoring service that helps first and second year students gain the skills and support they need to tackle their coursework confidently. 

  • Covers content from 100/200 level BIOL, CHEM, COMM, CPSC, ECON, MATH, PHYS, PSYC courses and more 
  • Group tutoring is free for all students, while private tutoring is paid 
  • Students can drop in during open hours without an appointment to attend a group session or schedule one-on-one time with tutors 

UBC Centre for Accessibility 

Provides disability-related accommodation and programming initiatives that removes barriers for students with disabilities and ongoing medical conditions. Accommodations include: 

  • Alternate format materials and assistive technology
  • Note-taking support, real-time captioning, or ASL interpreting 
  • Exam accommodations such as additional time or a private, distraction-reduced space

Students must meet with an Accessibility advisor to register for the service and discuss the kind of accommodations they might need. 

For Varsity Students 

Varsity Team Academic Coaches

Provides comprehensive information regarding academic support, eligibility, sport medicine, mental health, and nutrition through their Student Athlete Portal. Coaches can help with:

  • Understanding your course syllabi and grade tracking
  • Exam preparation and essay structures
  • Managing athletics with academics (particularly with competition travel)

For Indigenous Students 

Indigenous Undergraduate Research Mentorship Program (IURMP)

Indigenous undergraduate students will have the opportunity to be paired with a faculty member to gain insight on academic research at UBC. Students will:

  • Meet and connect with fellow Indigenous undergraduate students
  • Have access to workshops and other learning opportunities
  • Have the opportunity to contribute to research of their interest

Arts Peer Academic Coaches (APAC)

Connect with upper-year students that will coach you through your academic goals. Coaches can help with:

  • Study strategies
  • Time management techniques
  • Ways to approach academic tasks
  • Campus involvement opportunities

Commerce Undergraduate Society (CUS)

Provides information regarding student life and resources for academic concerns:

  • Submit academic-related issues to their Academic Grievances submission box
  • Or, request a meeting with a VP Academic for general academic advice!

Office of Student Academic Services (OSAS)

Here for any questions about your undergraduate degree and other related resources.

  • Available for drop-in at the Henry Angus Building, Room 165 or through their virtual office
  • Online request forms available for questions about academic concession, credits, etc

Make an appointment or view their drop-in hours through the OSAS website.

Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS)

Free group study sessions led by PASS Leaders (senior undergraduate students) to complement what you learn in lectures. PASS Leaders can help with:

  • Understanding course content on a deeper level
  • Testing course knowledge prior to tests and exams
  • Developing transferable study skills
  • Meeting other Sauder students

Sauder Communication Development of Programs

A series of resources for Sauder students such as: 

  • One-on-one writing appointments with the Canaccord Learning Commons Writing Coach 
  • Free weekly public speaking and impromptu speaking workshops 
  • English Conversation Circles that are casual and friendly weekly discussion sessions for students to practice conversational English 
  • Workshops to practice comprehensive professional communication etiquette

Note: The Canaccord Learning Commons is separate from the Chapman Learning Commons

Sauder Presentation Coaching 

Get coaching to improve your presentation skills from upper-year BCom peer coaches who will: 

  • Listen to your presentation 
  • Look over slides and discuss content 
  • Bookings are 30 minutes in length, for individuals or groups.

Engineering Academic Services

Here for any questions about your undergraduate degree and other related resources

  • Available for Drop-in at the Fred Kaiser (KAIS) Building, Office 1100 or virtually for quick inquiries
  • Appointments available to be booked via PD Portal for current Engineering Undergraduate students

Engineering Undergraduate Society (EUS) Tutoring Sessions 

Offers sessions and review workshops with practice problems and trained tutors to help students. 

  • Review workshops for lower level Math and Physics courses 
  • Large group sessions a week before the midterm with course question packers distributed beforehand 
  • Skill-based sessions to provide a LaTeX crash course for MATH 100/101

Free online and in-person tutoring sessions led by upper-year science students.

  • Offers sessions for popular first and second-year Science courses in Biology, Chemistry, Math, and Physics. 
  • Tutoring sessions are offered through both in-person drop-in sessions and online appointment-based sessions.

Science Undergraduate Society (SUS) Mentorship Program

Get paired with a graduate student mentor in diverse scientific fields of study. Students at all levels get assistance with: 

  • CV formatting
  • Finding extracurricular involvements on campus
  • Communication skill
  • Expanding their professional network. Mentors and mentees are matched based on academic and personal interests and are required to connect with each other at least once a month.

English & Writing 

CWSC Writing Consultations

Receive free formative peer feedback on your writing at any stage in the writing process from a graduate student. 

  • Feedback on any and all documents: first-year writing course assignments, research articles for publication, grant and scholarship applications, etc. 
  • Two types of feedback: 25-minute in-person dialogue or 25-minute written feedback consultation
